Flying through the night Bernard found his way thoughts turning to the seat beside him. How fortunate, he had thought, to have a spare seat alongside him on such a busy flight. He settled down to read and relax and tensed only slightly during the intense acceleration of take off.
Levelling off he began to feel uncomfortable however. There was a sense of discomfort. Something was wrong. The engine noise was loud, but he felt a gentle, regular sound underneath. He was sure it was breathing, but probably his own. He held it and counted to ten. No, it was still there.
His arm slipped off the armrest. Slipped, or pushed? Bernard dare not think about this or make any other attempts to see what was in this seat beside him.
The window shade lowered itself.
